Independent study gets you started, but in-person classes and project-based learning help you soar. Permaculture is an ethically based whole-systems design approach that uses concepts, principles, and methods derived from ecosystems, nature connected communities, and other time-tested systems to create human settlements and institutions. It’s also been called “saving the planet while throwing a better party.” Learn more about permaculture. Our work comes out of years of community organizing at the inextricable juncture of social justice and ecology and a long-standing history with the Movement Generation Justice and Ecology Project. From a systems theory perspective that is rooted in justice, this course will help you identify false solutions and understand that true sustainability requires uprooting systems of oppression at every level.

Rather, for each course you will receive a certificate of participation from our Office of Continuing Education and Continuing Education Units. If you are enrolled in a university undergraduate or graduate program and want to receive academic credit for a course, please ask your faculty advisor to consider approving your taking this as individual study. The Office of Continuing Education certificate will be evidence of your completion. Of course, you’ll have a better understanding of the concepts and principles by taking an official PDC, but you might also be able to learn some of the basics by taking an introductory class. For example, is a circle garden design appropriate for my new garden area, or is a contour garden a better choice?

Most permaculture courses focus on landscape design, but don’t do much to help you gain access to land or navigate the complex social circumstances that surround any attempt at sustainable or regenerative living. Many of the principles of permaculture are on display in the forests, gardens, fields, and infrastructure at Earthaven. It’s an amazing place to learn about both the techniques and technologies of more sustainable living, along with the human dynamics and systems required when cultivating long-term communities. In this PDC you will have the opportunity to deepen your leadership in the communities and endeavors you are part of, so you can find your niche in addressing the complex bio-cultural challenges we are facing at every scale at this time. Although lodging at Earthaven is optional, we strongly recommend it.
Camping is included in the cost of tuition. The campground offers drinking water, an outdoor shower, outhouse with a composting toilet, and hand washing station.
